🧠 How Raela Grotesque Was Born
Every typeface starts with a spark — an instinct to build something both useful and soulful. Raela Grotesque began as an experiment in simplicity: how far can geometry go before it loses its human touch?
At Lettertype Studio, we wanted to craft a sans serif that feels rational yet emotional, designed for brands that live between corporate precision and artistic warmth. The early sketches were made on paper, balancing clean strokes and organic proportions. The goal was clear: a font that breathes confidence, not perfection.

✍️ Design Philosophy
Raela Grotesque was drawn with structure in mind — every curve built to support clarity, every counterspace crafted for rhythm. But beneath its logic lies subtle imperfection: terminals that end slightly off-axis, spacing that feels natural rather than mechanical.
This combination makes Raela Grotesque not just another geometric sans, but a living system. It works for corporate identities, yet still speaks softly in editorial layouts and packaging design.
🔤 The Name ‘Raela’
Names matter. Raela came from the word “Rael”, meaning light, paired with an added feminine tone — giving it grace and timelessness. It represents balance: between light and weight, between human and structure.
When spoken aloud, “Raela” flows smoothly, just like its forms — rounded yet grounded. That’s exactly the feeling we wanted designers to experience when typing with it.
🧩 Building the Family
The Raela family took months of refinement. Each weight — from Thin to Black — was carefully adjusted to maintain contrast and legibility. The Grotesque suffix came later, symbolizing its connection to the historical sans serif lineage while introducing a modern edge.

OpenType features like stylistic alternates, ligatures, and multilingual support were added not as decoration, but as function. They allow Raela to flex across languages and design contexts — from branding to UI to print.
🌍 A Typeface with a Voice
Raela Grotesque is now one of our most recognized families, used by designers across industries — from creative agencies to fashion and tech brands. Its clarity makes it versatile; its warmth makes it memorable.
It’s a reminder that typography isn’t just about letters — it’s about emotion translated through form.
💬 Closing Thoughts
Designing Raela Grotesque was a lesson in restraint: learning when to stop polishing and let the typeface speak for itself. It embodies the essence of Lettertype Studio — fonts that fit every voice.
